Meet Your Therapist

Rachael Starkey
Accredited Cognitive Behaviour Psychotherapist (CBT)

Hello, I am an accredited Cognitive Behaviour Psychotherapist (CBT) and it is my passion to help individuals uncover their potential and achieve their life goals. My career journey has been driven by a deep-seated commitment to support others in overcoming life's obstacles and building resilient mental health foundations.

I have personally experienced the challenges of mental health, including undergoing therapy as a client, which has given me a unique perspective and empathy that I bring into my practice. This lived experience allows me to connect with my clients on a deeper level and provide an understanding and supportive environment for their healing journey.

My Experience

  • Extensive Experience: I have dedicated the first 10 years of my career to working with individuals of all ages, in various settings such as residential children's homes and on mental health wards. It was here I experienced how difficulties with early attachment can manifest and develop into long term struggles with mental health.

  • Child and Adolescent Focus: I have spent time working on both CAMHS inpatient and outpatient units. My work in CAMHS involved utilising low-intensity CBT with children, aiding them in overcoming challenges and fostering resilience. Moreover, I have considerable experience addressing child anxiety and offering parent support, assisting families in managing anxiety-related issues. My current work with children and young people involves supporting the recovery from trauma, difficulties with friendships and problems with studies / exam stress.

  • Psychotherapy for Adults: I currently work in an NHS Talking Therapies service where I have been for over 10 years.  During this time I have been working with individuals over the age of 16 in a local NHS service, first as a Psychological Wellbeing Practitioner (PWP) and now as a High Intensity CBT Therapist. I work with people with a range of difficulties such as anxiety, depression and complex PTSD.

  • Specialised Expertise: One of my areas of interest is working with childhood trauma. I understand the profound impact that early adverse experiences can have on mental health, leading to a range of issues such as anxiety, depression, attachment disorders, and difficulties in emotional regulation. I have also had additional training in psychodynamic interpersonal therapy (PIT) for people with long term conditions and I have experience of facilitating a persistent pain workshop. I use a blended approach, drawing from other therapeutic modalities which is grounded in empathy and evidence-based practices, aiming to help clients process their past, heal from their wounds, and develop healthier coping mechanisms for a fulfilling life.
